History of self-storage

Self-storage existed 3,000 years ago in Zhouyuan, ChinaAlthough there is historical evidence showing that self-storage existed 3,000 years ago in Zhouyuan, China, the modern-day self-storage concept began in Texas (USA) in the 1960 and is now a major industry in the USA with more than 50,000 self-storage facilities and still growing.

Self-storage businesses began appearing in Australia and New Zealand in the late seventies. The concept spread to the United Kingdom in the early 1980s then to France, Spain and the rest of Europe. Asia and the Middle East developed self-storage markets in the first decade of this century. Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore led the way with the rest of Asia now entering the market. Many believe China is at the tipping point with major investors showing an interest.

Before self-storage
Prior to self-storage, there was limited choice: people could overfill their property, dispose of potentially valuable items or rely on removal companies and large warehousing/storage companies to store goods with limited access and flexibility, long-term contracts and generally higher charges. Many removal companies are now converting their space to self-storage.
