SSA UK Declares the Annual Industry Survey Results

The annual survey results for the self storage industry in UK was launched yesterday in London.

Below is a summary of key findings:

  1. Occupancy increased from 73.1% in 2015 to 75.8% in 2016 on current lettable space.

  2. UK average net rental rate increased to £22.68 psf per annum (The highest since the study began in 2006)

  3. 65% of self storage customers are aged between 40 and 65 and 81% aged between 35 and 70

  4. Roadside visibility remains the main driver for store awareness.

  5. Occupancy growth indicates that demand is growing faster than supply.

  6. Over 70% of self storage users live within 20 minutes of their unit.

  7. 11% of self storage users currently rent more than one unit.

  8. The UK has 47% of the European self storage market.

  9. Divorced or separated people are more than twice as likely to use  self storage than single people.

  10. 70% of people could not name a storage brand.
